Jackson, Mississippi, October 17, 2019—On Saturday, October 26th at 7:30pm, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will present the first Pops concert of its 75th Anniversary Season with Aretha: A Tribute. Hop on the freeway of love with guest vocalists Capathia Jenkins and Ryan Shaw, as they channel the great diva with iconic hits like “Respect”, “A Natural Woman”, “Chain of Fools”, among others.

Capathia Jenkins brings the force of her classical training and church gospel to honor her long-time hero, Aretha Franklin. The singer-actress, whose credits include Broadway, Off-Broadway, symphony concerts, TV and film. R&B artist Ryan Shaw has graced London and Broadway stages, and is currently working on a solo tribute album honoring Marvin Gaye. In addition to Jerry Smith and The Children of Israel, plus backup singers in a tribute performance like no other.

Jenkins and Shaw divvy up the duties, with about half a dozen solos each and several duets. Though the evening focuses on Aretha, the audience will also hear hits from Otis Redding, Etta James, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, and Sam Cooke, to name a few. The soul-stirring program lineup includes “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, “Nobody Does It Better”, “Unforgettable”, “Amazing Grace”, “I Say A Little Prayer”, “Isn’t She Lovely”, “Try a Little Tenderness”, and so many more.

The MSO Pops Series presents three concerts per year, two at Thalia Mara Hall and Pepsi Pops at The Reservoir. Tickets for Pops I – ARETHA: A Tribute are $25 & up for adults and $5 for children/students, when accompanied by a paying adult.
