MSO Happy Hour with pianist Anton Nel

5:00 - 6:00 PM

Anton Nel was born and reared in Johannesburg, South Africa. Having excelled at the piano from his youth, he came to the United States to study in 1983, and has remained here ever since and today has a major career across the country as both a performer and teacher. The MSO is fortunate to have collaborated with Anton three times in recent years, and Anton happened to have been the soloist at the final concert which the MSO gave in February at Thalia Mara Hall prior to the Covid Crisis. Anton will join us to talk about how he is spending his time learning new repertoire and sustaining his teaching responsibilities during the pandemic, and we are likely to touch any number of fun topics which reflect Anton’s far-reaching passions and curiosity.

MSO Happy Hour with conductor William Garfield Walker

5:00 - 6:00 PM

Conductor William Walker will join us from his home in Vienna for a conversation about his life and work. Now only in his late twenties, he was born and reared in Jackson, Mississippi, studied as a cellist privately with the MSO’s principal cellist Ben Randman, was performing professionally with the MSO at the age of 16, and briefly began his studies in Chicago before moving to Europe to continue his studies and begin his career. As part of the MSO’s 75th Anniversary Celebration, William returned in March to join the MSO as guest conductor in a performance  of Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, at what turned out to be the very last performance the orchestra held prior to the Covid Crisis. William will share the fascinating story of his ongoing journey through music.
